3 - Wine Terms - In the Vineyard

1. Block: Vineyards are typically broken down into smaller sections called blocks. Blocks typically consist on one varietal (type of grape) and can range in size from just a few vines to many acres. Each acre of vineyard will produce between 1000 to 16,000 pounds of fruit. Higher quality vineyards are pruned to limit the crop and concentrate the flavors.

2. Row: A series of grape vines all trained onto the same trellis system. Growers use different configurations of the trellis systems based upon varietal, topography and climate. A Double Cordon trellis system is popular in California where each vines has been trained to have two "arms' that spread out horizontally.

3. Vine: A single plant that produces fruit. Each vine (about 2,400 per acre) will produce between 1/2 and 10 pounds of fruit. It takes about 2 1/2 pounds of fruit to make a bottle of wine.Young vines (<6 years) produce wine that often tastes "thin". Old vines (>30 years) produce less fruit than mature vines that is often "concentrated' in flavor.

1 - Question to ponder:

Are you thankful for what you do have, or do you lament over what you don't have?

Something to ponder:

If you shared this newsletter with 2 people, who then each share with two people, how many times would this need to be done to reach every human on earth? Answer
