3 - Wine Terms - Mourvèdre

Our August 2021 wine club premier release will be our 2018 Mourvèdre from Shandon - a sub-AVA in Paso Robles. So let's learn something about it.
  1. Mourvèdre is the French spelling and pronunciation of this varietal that originated in south eastern Spain where it is called Monastrell and migrated to France around 500 BCE by the  Phoenicians into the Roussillon region which up until 1659 was still part of Spain. It then migrated into the  Provence and  Rhone regions of France where it almost exclusively used as a blending grape where it is typically combined with Grenache and Syrah. The Australians commonly refer to this blend as a GSM (the order of the letters defines the primary grape first following in descending order)
  2. In Spain, Monastrell is still produced as a single varietal which is a dark, full bodied and is often s very tannic wine. We have chosen to follow the Spaniards and our Mourvedre has only a touch of blending. The wine is rich, lush and with a full beautiful mouthfeel and texture. This wine will continue to age wonderfully over the next 6-9 months though is very drinkable now. Mourvedre is one of Koi Zen's best sellers and this wine will sell out quickly.
  3. The Australians also produce Mourvedre/Monastrell, though they call it Mataro, and it is used most commonly in their GSM blends. It is also possible to find SGM, MGS, etc. defining the different blending ratios. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon also are used to produce Mourvedre blends.

We hope you enjoy our August wine release!

2 - Quotes from Me:

1. "Karma is a bitch" ~ The Zen Winemaker

2. "You can not understand beauty without understanding ugliness." ~ The Zen Winemaker

1 - Question to ponder:

If I like this and you like that - are we both right or are we both wrong, or is one of us right and the other is not? Sometimes what we "know" is right in our perspective is not-right in someone else's perspective. Realizing this is the basis of deep understanding and listening. This skill, once practiced, can help solve many of the world disagreements and help unite, unify and bring people together opposed to driving people apart. What can you do to help?

If you shared this newsletter with 2 people, who then each share with two people, how many times would this need to be done to reach every human on earth? Answer
